Part of my dogs tail is dead and dry and part of the bone is sticking out?

I called the vet and they are going to try to fit him in but what can i do for him before we get to the vets ? I got him yesterday and half his tail is DEAD its dry like jerky almost and the bone is just sticking out. He has no feeling at all in it and there is no blood. He chewed it open last night and still no blood its just dry jerky like skin stretched over bone. I was thinking of wrapping it in vet wrap then spraying the vet wrap with bitter apple to keep him from chewing it off. He is a toy poodle and not in any obvious pain. What type of injury whould have caused this ? I really wished the breeder would have docked him so this would not be an issue.
